Hsu Family

The Hsu family is a Sixth Generation Family Office with deep roots in Asia, particularly Greater China and Japan, based in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The family's long history in maritime activity can be traced back to 1830 in Zhoushan, China. Over the following decades, the family has held diversified business interests, with shipping remaining its core activity. This was formalised by the foundation of Eddie Steamships in Shanghai in 1922, which owned and operated Zhoushan, one of the first steel hulled passenger ships in China.

Oak Steamship Co., Ltd. was established in February 1961 in Hong Kong. Oak Steamship Co., Ltd. is a general ship management company which exclusively manages ships owned by Hsu family interests. Vessels and companies owned or managed by Oak Steamship Co., and its affiliates have become known collectively as the "Oak Group".

 

John Hsu
Director - Isola Capital Group

John is a member of the Board of Directors and a member of the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group, representing members of the Hsu family as shareholders in Isola Capital Group.  John’s family has been in the business of owning and operating bulkers, tankers, and specialized ships for six generations through entities including Sincere Navigation Corp. and Oak Maritime, Inc.

Since 1993, John has been responsible for managing the Hsu family’s investment portfolio through their family office, OSS Capital.  From 2003 to 2010 he was partner of Ajia Partners, one of Asia’s largest privately-owned alternative investment firms.  From 1998 to 2002, he was Chief Investment Officer of Matrix Global Investments, a hedge fund in US-listed technology companies.  

John has been a Director of Seaspan Corporation (NYSE) since April 2008 and Chair of the Compensation Committee since February 2011.  

John received his B.A. from Colgate University and his MBA from Columbia University, and is fluent in English, Japanese and Mandarin.
Sofina SA

Sofina is a European family-controlled investment company, listed on the Brussels stock exchange, and a supportive partner of entrepreneurs and families managing growing companies. Sofina invests both directly and through Private Equity funds. Its geographical scope is Europe, the United States, and more recently, Asia.

 

Maxence Tombeur
Director - Isola Capital Group

Maxence is the Head of Asia at Sofina S.A.  He represents Sofina Group, which is a shareholder of Isola Capital Group, as a member on the Board of Directors and the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group.

Maxence is a Non-Executive Director of GL Events and Vives Louvain Technology Fund.  Before joining Sofina S.A., he served in various positions at ING Bank in Brussels and Paris.

Maxence graduated from Louvain School of Management (Université Catholique de Louvain) and Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

David Yeung

David is a member of the Board of Directors and the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group.  He is a co-founder of Starcrest Capital Partners Limited, a professionally managed independent private equity real estate practice focusing on investments opportunities in China.  Besides investing in his core real estate business, David also holds diversified business interests in other sectors through direct investment or investing in funds.

David has over a decade of experience in the finance and real estate investment industries.  Prior to co-founding Starcrest Capital Partners in 2010, he was previously with Goldman Sachs Asian Special Situations Group where he was responsible for managing the firm’s proprietary real estate investing activities in equity, debt, hybrid and direct assets across both the private and public markets, including restructuring some Chinese private real estate companies with a total investment of over US$1.5 billion.  Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, David was with MGPA, one of the largest real estate fund managers in Asia where he focused on direct asset and joint venture investments in the Asia ex-Japan region.

David is a graduate of Ohio State University with an honors degree in Business Administration.

Jean Chalopin
Executive Chairman, Deltec International Group

Jean is the Executive Chairman of Deltec International Group. He was the founder of DIC Entertainment, an international film and television production company and animation studio responsible for creating and producing television shows. By 1981, DIC group of companies had become the world's largest creator and producer of children's programs for television.

In 1987, Jean sold his interest in the DIC Group and formed C&D (Creativity & Development), which had its main offices in Paris and Tokyo. An associated company, JetLag Productions, was also created in Los Angeles. The newly formed group's strategy was once again centered on top quality writing and production for children. By 1996, the C&D Group included a film library that had grown to more than 1,500 half hours and was sold to the Saban/Fox Kids Network joint venture that year. Jean's creations include renowned shows including: Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, The Littles, Ulysses 31, The Care Bears, Kissyfur, The Real Ghostbusters, The Cities of Gold, Dennis the Menace, Zoobilee Zoo, Conan the Adventurer, M.A.S.K., Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors, Lady Lovelylocks, King Arthur and The Knights of Justice, The Bots' Master, The Littlest Pet Shop, Happy Ness and Cyrano 2022.

After a long and distinguished career in film and television production in Europe, Hollywood and Japan, Jean moved to Beijing, China in 2004 to set up Mediaplus Capital, a boutique investment and venture capital platform focusing on renewable energy and consumer food and beverage opportunities in China.

Jean is a founder and Chairman of The StoryPlus Foundation, originally established in Switzerland, which is a charity organisation focused on providing underprivileged children with necessary means to study. The Foundation also funds schools & orphanages in underdeveloped countries and provides teachers with free stories for their students. The Foundation has also joined forces with other charitable organizations that strive to improve the education level and well-being of children around the world.

David Baverez

David is a shareholder and a member of the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group.  He is a Responsible Officer for Type 1 (Dealing in Securities), Type 4 (Advising on Securities) and Type 9 (Asset Management) activities licensed by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission.

He has over twenty years of institutional investment experience in public and private markets.  He is based in Hong Kong where he splits his time between seeding and advising various start-ups, and focusing on investment opportunities resulting from anomalies between the Eastern and the Western parts of the world.  David was a Founding Partner of KDA Capital, a long only European equity fund until 2010, when he returned the entire cash back to L.P.s, correctly anticipating the European sovereign crisis.

Prior to that, David spent ten years as a Portfolio Manager at Fidelity Investments in London and Boston, managing various investment funds including the award-winning Fidelity Europe Aggressive Fund with over USD6 billion AUM.

David is a graduate of HEC Business School (Paris) and of the INSEAD MBA Programme.  His various interests include European modern art and public affairs, which led him to launch and contribute for three years (2010-2012) to "Market Makers" in the leading French newspaper "Les Echos". 

David Kedwards

David is a shareholder and member of the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group. He is Managing Director of Pearson English Direct Delivery Business and the CEO of Wall Street English International, which was acquired by Pearson Longman LLC in 2010.

David started his career at Wall Street English China as the Operations Director in 2001, and became the CEO in China in August 2002. Wall Street English China experienced tremendous growth under his guidance and expanded its presence in key markets including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with the opening of over 50 learning centers in nine years.

In August 2010, David was appointed CEO of Wall Street English International, which has 450 learning centers in 28 countries around the world. Prior to joining Wall Street English, he worked as the UK Operations Director for KinderCare Learning Centers, the largest private childcare operator in the world. In that role he was responsible for planning and implementing the start-up of KinderCare’s UK business. He was also a founder and General Manager of Bright Horizons Day Nurseries in the UK.

David has worked in business development roles for Marriott Hotels, TRW (in the aerospace industry), and Marsh McLennan (in the insurance industry). 

David received his MBA from the University of Bradford and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics and Economics from the University of Lancaster. He also holds a Diploma in Marketing Management from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK).

Anthony Chan

Anthony is Chief Executive Officer, shareholder and a member of the Board of Isola Capital Group and a member of the Advisory and Investment Committee.

Anthony has over 16 years of experience in finance and was previously the Head of Asia, Managing Director and member of the Investment Committee of a global alternative investment fund manager. He has broad investment experience across the Asia Pacific region, in the natural resources, renewable energy, industrial, consumer, technology and biotechnology sectors.

Anthony started his career in finance with CSFB, and later joined Citigroup and Lehman Brothers Asia where he completed over USD10 billion of transactions involving debt and equity capital raisings, equity-linked issuances, cross-border M&A transactions, private equity exits, principal investments, asset divestitures and corporate restructurings.

Anthony attained a Bachelors of Commerce (Finance and Economics) from The University of Sydney and Bachelors of Laws (Honours) from The University of Sydney Law School. He is also a graduate of The College of Law (Sydney) and was admitted to the High Court of Australia and Supreme Court of NSW. Anthony is a graduate from the Financial Engineering Program of Stanford University and attended the Stanford Executive Institute

Anthony is a Responsible Officer for Type 1 (Dealing in Securities), Type 4 (Advising on Securities) and Type 9 (Asset Management) activities licensed by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission.  Anthony is a member of the Limited Partners Committee, Family Office Committee and Wine Committee of HKVCA, a member of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Taxation Committee, YEC Executive Committee for ‎HKGCC and a member of the Hong Kong Securities and Investments Institute.  He holds directorships in various private and public companies.

Anthony is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and a keen tennis player, golfer, wine enthusiast and Formula One fan.

Guillaume Dhamelincourt

Guillaume is a shareholder and member of the Advisory and Investment Committee of Isola Capital Group.  In addition to his responsibilities with his family holdings, Guillaume is the Head of Sales for Asia for La Française Group, a global asset management firm headquartered in Paris with expertise in managing securities and real estate assets. 

Guillaume is also responsible for business development at JK Capital Management Ltd in Hong Kong, an Asian equity and bond asset manager, subsidiary of La Française Group.

Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Guillaume was Investment Director at HSBC Specialist Investments in London, the property and infrastructure private equity arm of HSBC. Before that he was with JP Morgan in their asset management division.

Guillaume is a graduate of ESSEC business school in Paris majoring in Finance and he is a CFA charterholder.
